Magazines, newspapers and books were encouraged to be written for a wider variety of audience, intended for more women to start reading and to be more informed. Eighteenth century beliefs carried into 19th century that women and men served different purposes, women are supposed to be the homemakers while men provided and worked to support the family. Men relied on the women to keep the house clean and peaceful, if women did not fulfill the need to be a great companion to her husband there was disappointment. As the century began to move forward more paying jobs for women began to increase. Leading into the 19th century.

Women’s contribution in science started to become more recognized, along with contributions in mathematics. In 1826 Mary Fairfax Somerville was only the second women to practice at the Royal Society of Science, she practiced magnetism. Nursing institutions for women started to appear and Catherine Brewer Benson was the first women to receive a bachelor’s degree from a college! Girl POWER J
