Chapter 12

It is Autum of 1918 and Paul is sent back home on a 14 day leave due to exposure to gas. Paul is the only remaning classmate from when they first joined. In this short charpter Paul is spending time in a garden reflecting on the war, what has happend and what is to come. Currently everyone is talking about peace and the war stopping their fighting, but not quite the end. Paul is faced with the fact that he does not know what to do with himself. He reconizes that he is the lost generation. The elder generation doesn't understand what they are going through and the future generations won't stand them and think of them as outsiders.
In October 1918 Paul dies. Pauls face shows has a calm sense to it, almost as if he wanted the end to come.
The theme in this chapter is reflecting the post war Germany, how its going to be a struggle for the young soldiers to fit back into society.
